How To Overcome Fear, Doubt and Insecurity

by Kathy on January 25, 2011

Have you ever had one of those days? You know, the kind of day where you just can’t figure out how to overcome fear, doubt, and insecurity? Maybe it’s because of something that happened, or something that didn’t happen, or maybe it just blindsided you for no apparent reason at all. Whatever the culprit, you can’t help but ask yourself, “why do I even bother?”, and quitting seems like a great and very possible solution….

If you answered no to this question, you’re either very lucky or you’re lying to yourself. The truth is that most of us struggle at one point or another with feelings that we’re not good enough, we’re not worthy, or we’re not capable (does that make you feel less alone in your struggles?). These feelings are enough to stop some people dead in their tracks. But we’re different, right?

As students of personal development we know that we need to live in gratitude, make vision and belief the cornerstone of our lives, and always, always, always mind our minds.

Despite this knowledge, sometimes you just hit a brick wall that seems impossible to hurdle, which is especially difficult for those of us who understand what it is to be enlightened. In fact, some of us (myself included…) have even made the situation worse by feeling guilty for feeling bad.

The reason I bring this all up is, just last week I had one of those days.

Oddly enough (although I believe there are no coincidences in life….), that dark cloud of negativity was precipitated by an unusual event. Just 2 days earlier, one of the most self confident, successful, capable people I know broke down and shared feelings of self doubt. I was totally blown away that this person, who “so” has it all together, could even have these kinds of feelings, or struggle with the same issue that I sometimes think is only for the weak at heart: how to overcome fear, doubt, and insecurity. Yet their pain was a gift to me. It gave me clarity and strength.  I saw first-hand that this is a human condition, one that strikes even the best of us.

Just 2 days later, out of the clear blue, that self loathing, scared, overwhelming voice of defeat started singing its ugly tune inside my head. Hopelessness and helplessness started to take over and I felt unable to fight it. But thankfully, rather than sticking around for days – as it sometimes does – this came and went in a matter of hours. Maybe it’s because of the personal development work I’ve been doing, maybe my spiritual growth, maybe the fact that I actually know what I’m doing, maybe Divine Grace. Probably a combo deal.  Whatever the reason, I want to share two very significant changes in mindset that brought me back into the light.

The Enemy Is Cunning

My spiritual journey has taken me down a new path, one which brings the Word of God into a whole new light and meaning, making it much more real in my everyday life. One of the realities is that just as there is a God, there is an enemy. He is cunning, wishes to break and destroy us, and is willing to do whatever it takes to see us suffer and keep us in bondage.

As the darkness and despair began to fight for control in my mind, I recognized for the first time that these thoughts and feelings were not mine….they were not me. They were coming from the enemy, they were fighting to destroy my will, and I had the choice to allow that to happen – or to stand up and defend myself.

This evil enemy wants to keep me in bondage. He knows that I’m on a steady path towards freedom, and that I plan to take many along with me. He also knows that the easiest way to prevent this good from flowing into my life is to plant the seeds within my mind that will lead to self sabotage. After all, it ALL begins in the mind. Yes, very cunning indeed….use my own mind to create my own downfall!

I guess it’s just a part of my personality that I’m usually willing to fight for what I want. When I saw this as a fight against an evil enemy rather than a weakness that I couldn’t control I had one of those “ah-ha” moments and something clicked in my mind. I wasn’t going to lose this fight.

I am stronger than the enemy.

I WIN

Many of us, me included, have been taught that there is a great reward waiting for us beyond this lifetime. It’s been held out in front of me ever since I can remember, an elusive promise of something better in exchange for living a good life.

What I’m beginning to wake up to is the fact that this promised land is available to each and every one of us here on earth…..today. There’s a Divine plan for my life and if I play it out with faith and knowing, I will always win.

Within my own being I have everything I need

Rather than trying to explain it, I invite you to watch as Pastor James Wood delivers a message that practically brought me to tears. Yes, it’s long but I can guarantee you it will touch your soul and may even impact your life in a major way.

Not only is Pastor Wood my spiritual leader, but he’s also my business partner, friend, and mentor (for which I am tremendously grateful). If you’d like to experience more of his messages you can visit his youtube channel or Facebook page at His Greater Worx

Why am I sharing this story of my weakness with you? It was in hearing a friend do the same that helped me to realize that I am not alone in this, and that all I have to do is look to the Truth to set me free.  I’ve picked up some emotional and spiritual tools that have taught me how to overcome fear, doubt, and insecurity when they try to invade my soul. Maybe a day will come when you’ll be overcome by the pain of hopelessness and you’ll remember back to this post. Maybe one thing that helped me will help you.

Be Blessed!

Aloha Kathy,

Thank you for being so transparent in your post! Yes, we all have those days…. Jim Rohn says “Beware of the enemy in your mind”. The key is once you are aware, you can change your thoughts which changes how you feel.

Congratulations on “breaking though” and recognizing that part of yourself.

Looking forward to connecting with you next week,
Kellie :)

Kathy:

Thank you for being so transparent. I think we are called ‘human’ just because in & of ourselves we are weak & frail. I am so glad I have a Higher Power to turn to (as you also do) not only when the seems troubling but also for Inspiration.

Be Blessed

Oh Kathy,
Feeling guilty for feeling bad is something I truly relate to. When that occurs, I crawl into my cave and process it through before returning to the World.

You’ve shared an emotionally raw side of yourself. I empathize with every r-rated feeling you’ve expressed, and I admire and respect you all the more for having been so honest and open. It is easy to show the positive, upbeat side of yourself. It takes a lot of strength, security and grit to share the downside.

You’re a special treasure in my life, girlfriend! I’ve bookmarked this post when “cave dwelling” strikes again. Thanks for your amazing inspiration!

Aloha Kathy, I appreciate your expression and sharing how you feel and freeing yourself from the fallacy of the flesh giving you false messages. At times we do get off track by relying upon ourselves and yet our spirit talks to us with truth to let go and look up to heaven and let the Father and the Son of God to share your load. I was reading the book of Job from the bible, and this man dedicated his true honor in God and even thru his tested tribulations, he still honor the Lord. And God was pleased and new how much, Job loved him.

The blessings was abundant and the challenge was won. Mahalo, Lanikee.com

Isn’t it amazing how much better we feel when people we put on pedestals/ think have it all together/ gurus show us their vulnerability and struggles? Not better because of what they are going through, but because it reminds us of our connectedness as humans. It is absolutely a human condition to have fears, doubts and insecurities, and it’s up to each of us to do the work and find the tools that keep us operating from faith ~ because as I wrote in my post this week, faith and fear cannot exist in the same space at the same time!

It’s so great you found a way to “fight the combatant” and win! This post is so beautifully written and heartfelt, it was truly a pleasure to read. Thank you so much for your transparency and authenticity, Kathy!

Kathy, I can so relate to this post. Thank you for being so open. It is interesting to learn that even the outwardly most together people go through periods of self doubt and that in itself is comforting. Your sharing of these thoughts has made me realise that everyone goes through these dark times every now and then. Like you, my journey of self development and my spiritual journey have taught me to deal with these phases much more quickly, but I like your analogy of thinking of it as a fight against an evil enemy.

Thanks for sharing Kathy;

I agree with you and believe we all struggle with these feelings. You’ve got some great insight on this subject. There are two ways that I look at at fear;

The first is a “Godly fear”, or a reverence, respect, and trust in Almighty God. The bible tells us that “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.” this is the only fear we should have. Because if we are truly putting our full trust in the Holy and Sovereign God then what do we have to fear.

The second type of fear is the opposite and one that is what so easily trips us up; however, this is how I try to remember that this fear has no hold on me. This F.E.A.R. is False Expectations About Reality and it’s a trap not to fall for. Often the adversary uses those false expectations to cripple us and destroy us into never taking positive actions to be the over comer that we should be.

A bit long and there is much more that can be said, but I hope this helps. May Jesus bless you as you draw closer to Him

Thanks for your post and video Kathy,

It’s so funny how we tend to think that leaders have transcended all insecurity and doubts. I had a moment like this in talking to a great leader that I respect.

I also believe that there is a greater reward in living a good life than can be given in this lifetime. It’s who we become in doing what we do that matters. It’s what we can take with us that matters most!

Kathy, I so appreciate your honesty. You’ve also hit on something I haven’t heard many others say… that some of those negative thoughts do not come from within ourselves, but from the enemy, who is very real. Thank God, HE is just as real, and far greater than the enemy.

Thanks everybody for all your kind words of encouragement and appreciation. the more I blog, the more I’m realizing that this is just an incredible medium for us to share important messages with each other.

Yes, the technical and business tips are great but I’m finding that it’s the heartfelt, personal sharing that really makes a difference. We all want to truly experience our true connection to one another, and I’m so very happy to have the chance to do so with so many amazing, courageous people.

Love to you all,

Hi Kathy,

Thanks for sharing this uplifting post. Everybody has fear and insecurities. A true leader is someone that is in touch with their fears yet move forward in spite of the fear. Fear is actually good because that’s how we’ve been able to evolve. If we didn’t have any fears at all we’d do stupid things like: seeing a cop parked waiting to ticket someone and you speed ahead 100 miles an hour :) . Doing what you fear is how you built confidence.

Thanks for sharing your fears and showing a personal side of you, Kathy.

Kathy,
Thank you for being real. People love when others speak from their heart. It reaches their heart. We all have our struggles, it’s just that most of us don’t share them. But it is soooo true, what we think about, comes about. As soon as we recognize negativity from the “cunning one” we must NIX it as soon as possible or it will cause us to have one of those bummer days instead of continuing on in victory and joy!
Blessings to you!

Hi Kathy,
Nice to meet you through TSA! Yes, we all have fears and it’s a challenge for sure. I look at fear as an opportunity, not as an enemy, and it depends on the person how they interpret it. But I embrace it because it teaches me a great deal about my self. I watched your videos and they are indeed helpful. I appreciate your honesty and sharing.

Hi Kathy,

Thank you so much for your post. I needed to hear that message. I too struggle with wondering if this is worth it and keeping myself in the positive but when you put it in the perspective that it’s the enemy trying to wear us down it seems a lot easier to get back up and continue on.

Kathy,

Wow! From now on I will remind myself that it is the enemy, not my own thoughts. The Yogis talk about the mind as something you need to control and master. The solution is to focus on the light, the higher power, your dream, your potential.

I love what Paster Wood says in the video, “No matter what you feel inside your body, no matter what you see in the world, it won’t change what you know, that you know you will win – in the final round.

Wow is that inspiring. Kathy, You win. Thanks for reminding me that I win too.

Warmly,
Erica

Hi Kathy,
Thanks for sharing this message, along with that of your pastor.
Everybody has to deal with overcoming fear, doubt and insecurity, or they would not be growing. What is amazing is that once an issue is focused upon and we stretch and conquor, we win. And the more we win, the easier it gets. Mindset, training, perseverance and courage can help us overcome most hurdles. And as Pastor Wood says, we have already won!
Blessings,
Linda

What an amazing post you have for us. I enjoy how transparent it is and how it has several different views wrapped up in it. The things in the post you pointed out for myself either are in full effect or not with me. Now I know to come back here when i struggle so I kind of have a boost of confidence and momentum get myself out of the rut and forward in my life.

Dear Kathy,
You published this post a year ago. I was in the same place then, and I have been in and out of it this whole time, but yesterday and today I did some deep searching for more truth about this struggle. Today I began to see with the eyes of my spirit, and behold: I came to the same place you describe. I can only tell you that nothing we do for Him is ever in vain, and your transparency has validated everything I learned from the Word and from the Lord directly. It’s amazing to me that we know we can do anything through the Lord, but sometimes the obvious evades us. “Thank you,” seems like a small thing to say, but I’m saying it anyway. Thank you! Sincerely, ShariLee run4theprize.com

ShariLee,

Thanks for your kind words. As a result of your comment on this post I went back and re-read it. It seems that no matter how evolved we become, or how rock solid our faith is, there are times when we all become victims of this type of hopelessness. Just part of the human condition I suppose.

The good news is that we always have the choice to turn away from these fears and choose faith. When we rely on the power and love of Christ who strengthens us, hopelessness can turn into joy in a split second.

Since writing this post I have developed a blog for Pastor James Wood (featured in the second video above), which includes full length recordings of his powerful weekly sermons. If you are moved by the clip above you may want to check out http://www.greaterworxministry.com to hear more.

In love,

We really need to be very cautious and never let ourselves be drowned with those negative emotions that will surely consume us. I came across a video that also talks about what to do when you doubt everything even your capabilities. It’s a good video to watch and learn from Marie Forleo. http://marieforleo.com/2011/07/when-you-doubt-everything/
