If you’re a network marketer, you’ve no doubt heard that one of the most important MLM success tips is to have a clearly defined “Why”. Over the last few years I’ve had many reasons for doing what I do….and even a few really good “Why”s.
What I want to share with you here is that there is a HUGE difference between a reason and a why. And yes, when you understand this difference it could be the one tip of all MLM success tips that could catapult your business to total success. And yes, this has everything to do with the army….at least in my case!
My youngest son will be starting high school this year. He is an amazing, bright, kind hearted kid filled with compassion and an empathetic spirit. Almost to a fault, which is where the army comes into play.
Derek will be entering high school as a member of the ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps), and plans to remain in the program throughout his high school career. To some this may seem a noble cause, and I am proud of his decision – but as a mother it’s my natural God-given instinct to protect my children.
What’s this all have to do with my why? It’s all about underlying intentions. You see, a few years back my husband took a very early retirement after a work related accident, which altered the course of our financial future forever. As Derek has blossomed from a child to the amazing person he is becoming, we’ve noticed that he is overly concerned with spending our money.
If you’re the parent of a teenager, you may be envying this unusual situation I find myself in, but really, you should think again! It’s not his job to be watching out for our financial future, and trust me, he has nothing to worry about. Yet he often declines our offers to purchase items he really should have, skimps when he doesn’t have to, and wants to contribute his own money to pay for items that are our responsibility to give him.
Now that you have a pretty good picture of this boy’s nature, you’ll probably understand my concern with his choice to join ROTC. If he truly wants this for himself that’s great. What worries me, though, is that this is being driven by his desire to save us from paying for college. Wow, how’s that for a driving Why???
I’m sure you can relate to me in that my family is the most important thing in my life. Much more important than money, prestige, self satisfaction, or time freedom. At one point my Why was to retire my husband early (the Universe has taken care of that for us…). At one point it was my ego wanting to prove to others that I could “do it”. It’s at times been about being philanthrophic, being generous, being the best I could be. All good and worthy reasons. But now I have a real, concrete Why. One I have the great joy of looking at every single day. One that can’t wait.
If the Why is big enough the How does not matter.
Do you have a Why that will sustain you through fear, doubt, insecurity, through the days when you just want to quit? Those days will present themselves, and one of the greatest MLM success tips I can share with you is that you need to clearly define a strong why. Please do share in the comments box below, and I look forward to seeing you at the top

Hi Kathy,
Thanks for sharing your why with us. Having a strong enough why will get us through the trials and tribulations and learning curve to make it.
All the best,

Ah Kathy,
This is such an important subject – finding your why. That single factor combined with the correct mindset will take you forward on your journey towards your dreams. You are showing your son how important that why is.
Have an awesome day,

Hi Kathy,
Thank you so much for sharing this post with us! I make sure to thank anyone I meet when I find out they have served their country in the military, but you are right – seeking college funding should not be the primary reason. If your son still feels called to military service after you provide college funding, I know you will be proud of his decision. You are an amazing mom! And an inspiration for us all to find our why!
Kathy,
It made me smile to read this post as I remembered my first “real” sponsor in MLM really made me dig in to myself, do my internal homework and find that “why”. This became a defining moment in my business. When the why is clear, everything becomes clear and the focus is there to keep going when others would throw in the towel and quit. Good share you have here.
The WHY!!
Rock On!

Aloha Kathy,
Those of us who choose to be parents are so blessed as they are the ultimate “Why”! Thank you for sharing your experiences with your son. Wanting to spend time with my 8 year old son lead me to “leap” into my home based business and the rest has been history.
Much gratitude,
Kellie
