Search Engine Ranking Improvement Series – Part 1: Keywords

by Kathy on November 16, 2009

Welcome to my search engine ranking improvement series! Over the course of the next several weeks I’ll be sharing some of the best kept secrets known to the top Internet marketers on the planet.

If you’ve figured out that it is in giving that you will receive, then you’ll want to retweet this phenomenal information and share the wealth!

If you’re not quite that evolved yet don’t worry….stick with me and my tribe and sooner or later you’ll begin to prosper and actually find joy in helping “the competition” (and if you really stick around long enough you’ll learn that there really is no such thing as competition, the reality is that there’s more than enough for all of us…but that’s a lesson for another day)! In the meantime feel free to soak up the wealth of knowledge I’ll be giving away, and start putting it to good use.

Search engine ranking improvement always, always, I repeat always begins with good keyword research, so it’s only fitting that we start here. This may be elementary to some but if you’re in that boat, just think back to the blessed day that you learned there was actually a way to get improved search engine rankings, other than throwing up great content and hoping it would make it to a somewhat respectable place in the search engines.

Do you remember that feeling when the light bulb went on? I do, and from that day forward things got better. So if you already have a handle on getting search engine ranking improvement through keyword research and analysis feel free to skip this article and go check out another great post on my site. Just be sure to return later for some higher level training as I continue this search engine ranking improvement series.

If you’re new to this, be very sure that this information is pure gold. It’s all about keywords – what they mean to your business, how to find them, how to analyze them, and how to use them to create online content that will be seen by your target audience.

The Importance of Keywords

Keywords are the words and phrases that search engines use to help match their customers to the information they’re looking for. One of the best Google ranking tips is to find what people are looking for and give it to them. Plain and simple, that is the service that Google provides to the online world, and they are the very best at delivering – and they don’t want to be tricked.

There are a lot of methods being taught by those who think they can outsmart Google by playing tricks like loading their content with high quality keywords, whether or not they are relevant to the information being provided. This is not advisable; even if you do manage to fool the search engines you’ll be cheating the user.

Trust me when I tell you there are legitimate ways to both guarantee search engine ranking improvement and provide valuable content. After all, your online reputation is on the line here, right?

How to Find Profitable Keywords

Just what do I mean by profitable keywords? These are words or phrases that are in good demand while at the same time in low supply. Generally, keywords that have less than 10,000 searches per month can be good, provided that they have a reasonable number of searches. Personally I like to see at least 100 searches per month, but will in some cases use words or phrases with less.

A keyword phrase such as “work from home”, for example, is in very high demand but is not a good keyword for novice Internet marketers. Due to the intense competition of this phrase it would be extremely difficult to rank on the first page of Google.

What you basically want to do is look for the low hanging fruit. When you rank high in the search engines you won’t get massive amounts of traffic but you will get a steady stream of traffic that will help to build your business. Think about this, would you rather have an amazing keyword that’s on page 48 of Google, or a decent keyword on the front page?

So, how do you find these profitable keywords that will ensure search engine ranking improvement? There are many different tools available on the Internet. The three I recommend are

  • Google Analytics – free keyword search tool, great for those on a tight budget
  • Micro Niche Finder – available on Windows platform only – check out the video tutorial below
  • Market Samurai – more expensive than Micro Niche Finder, but available on the Mac platform

How to Use Profitable Keywords

Once you’ve found a few nice keywords that are relevant to the content you’re producing, you’ll want to use them for effective search engine ranking improvement. First, identify your most profitable keyword and use it in the title, the first paragraph, and sprinkled throughout your material. Other less profitable keywords can be used throughout the content as well.

How Often to Place Profitable Keywords in Content

Search engines look very favorably on submissions that contain between 1% – 3% keyword density. For every 100 words this will be from 1 – 3 targeted words. Be very careful, though, not to overdo keyword use just for search engine ranking improvement purposes. Your goal should always be to give your readers what they are looking for.

They Key To Successfully using this information is to consistently produce high quality work. One article or great blog post will not make you an Internet superstar, it takes time and effort, but is well worth the personal and professional satisfaction that you’ll get once you’ve created a true Internet presence.

Kathy,
This was an incredible post!! I don’t know if people realize how much gold you just delivered to their doorstep with this one powerful statement “your most profitable keyword and use it in the title, the first paragraph”. I have to tell you, I personally was not using this strategy for my first paragraph now I will have to go in and mody my own entries!!

Thank you so much for bringing such actionable content and I am really looking forward to the rest of this series!

Hi Kathy, I was talking with Glenn Arcaro today and we were talking about this. It’s ironic that you have a blog post about it. I need to learn more and I’m excited about this series.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

Kathy,

This information is absolutely fantastic! Keyword research was such a hard time for me and I struggled for a while with all the “free” ones. I finally broke down and bought Micro Niche Finder and it is a dream come true. I noticed you talked about that one and I thought I’d throw my 2 cents in as well.

Great post and look forward to the followups as well.

Hi Kathy,

I love keyword research! It’s great for both organic rankings as well as PPC and truly sets the pros and the amateurs apart. Great demo of micro niche finder.

I’ve been using niche bot classic which works fairly well but I’ve been considering upgrading to either of the two paid programs you mentioned.

This is some serious GOLD you have shared and I love that you check ezinearticles as well to see if an opportunity exists to place high in the rankings there too. That’s such an awesome feature of the program.

Google loves authority sites such as ezinearticles which increases your chances exponentially to rank for the keywords you want. Great post!
