What Does Namaste Mean, and How Can it Bring You Peace?

by Kathy on July 22, 2009

What does Namaste mean?

Namaste is an ancient Indian greeting that means “I respect the divinity within you that is also within me”.

How Can it Bring You Peace?

It’s a well known fact of life – true success cannot be achieved without personal development. In order  to live the incredible life you deserve,  it’s essential that you find the answer to the age old question; who am I?

You may define yourself as a business person, a parent, a child…(you get the picture). But in essence you are none of these things. These are some of the labels that define your ego – the persona that fights for control over the true self.

That true self is in fact the non-physical realm of your being, often referred to as the soul, the Divine, the Universe. It’s that which connects us to each and every other being and thing in our world. It’s the only true source of peace, love, and joy. And without connection to this immortal part of our being there can never be true happiness or success.

Once you recognize the Divine within you and begin to identify yourself with this Source of all things, you’ll become free from the negative feelings and emotions that keep you from experiencing true freedom, happiness, and success. These include fear, a sense of inferiority or superiority, judgement of people and situations, need to control events and other people, and insecurity.

In the knowledge of the Divinity that is you, you’ll have a true understanding that every other person is the same spirit, embodied in a different form. This belief, represented by the Namaste greeting, brings with it total respect and love for self and others.

This is where the Law of Attraction will begin to work in your life. This self power, which is the only real power you can ever have, will attract positive people, circumstances, and things to you with no effort on your part. How does this work?

Your enlightenment will help you to achieve a state of grace, which is where miracles are created. When you recognize the connection to all that is, deny the ego, and live from this state of grace there’s a natural support from the Universe. You become one with the flow of life and the abundance it offers.

So, how do you get from where you are to where you want to be? It takes daily vigilance and requires a sincere desire to evolve. With time and effort, you’ll see an amazing transformation take place in your life. Some of the practices that will help you include:

Daily Meditation

Meditation is a key element in achieving a connection with the Divine within. It brings us out of the ego, and quiets the mind. There are many forms of meditation that you can use, and it doesn’t matter which you choose.

The best effects are achieved by meditating for at least half an hour each morning and evening.

Denial of the Ego

If you’ve read the Eckhart Tolle books  The Power of Now and A New Earth, you know that your ego is not your friend! It’s a conditioned part of your being that seeks approval, control, and external power. It ties you to your past and exists in constant fear of being extinguished. It will do anything to survive.

The best way to break away from this mask that pretends to be you is to develop a state of awareness.  For example, the next time you become involved in an argument, step back and ask yourself why it’s so important to be “right” and make the other person “wrong”.

Once you recognize that this is an act of sabotage created by the ego, the ego will lose its power. This practice takes constant awareness, but in time becomes less and less work – and will bring a sense of serenity that you’ll cherish.

Practicing Non-Judgement

In his book, The 7 Spiritual Laws of Success, Doctor Deepak Chopra teaches that one of the ways the ego strives for self preservation is through constant judgement. In the course of a day, most people make many judgement calls. We not only judge other people but ourselves and situations as well.

Through making a conscious effort to stop labeling people, things, and events as good or bad, right or wrong, we bring ourselves more into alignment with the Divine within. Namaste becomes a way of life.

Silencing Internal dialog

Another effect the ego has on us is the seemingly endless internal chatter that many experience. It’s those constant thoughts that run through the mind – making snap judgements, living in the past, planning the future.

If you begin to really pay attention to this self talk you’ll probably notice that most of it is negative and hurtful. One way to quiet the mind is to become aware of the internal dialog as it begins, stop it immediately, and recognize that it is your true self, the Divine within, that is observing. In this moment of enlightenment you’ll create a gap in which you’re very likely to feel an instant sensation of peace and well being.

If you’d like to do more reading on this subject I highly recommend the Eckhart Tolle books The Power of Now and A New Earth, as well as The 7 Spiritual Laws of Success, by Doctor Deepak Chopra. These spiritual leaders have become instrumental in helping others to live according to the principles of Namaste.

In closing I’d like to remind you to always remember that it’s the journey, not the destination, that matters most. I leave you with a great quote by Doctor Deepak Chopra which states “Wherever you go in the midst of movement and activity, carry your stillness with you. Then the chaotic movement around you will never overshadow your access to the reservoir of creativity, the field of pure potentiality.”

Namaste,

Kathy Jodrey

Great post Kathy,

Breaking away from the mask of the ego and recognising this part doesn’t really have our best interests in mind but is only interested in maintaining our trance states, is a challenge for all of us. Connecting with the true self is a great source of joy.

Namaste,

Hello Kathy,

I am from India and I really appreciate the beautiful explanation you have written regarding the meaning of the word “Namaste”.

I am from the new generation of India, who hasn’t actually forgotten its spiritual and cultural background, but is also not involved with it, as much our elders were or would like us to be.

Its really good to see that you have taken the time and made an excellent effort to spread this beautiful message of peace and tranquility among your friends and well wishers.

I have seen and read at various places on the internet that Indians are inherently cowards and they are not up for a fight. I wish the persons who spoke this understood where we come from. We would never harm or attack anyone but only defend our integrity.

I hope some of those guys read your post and truly understand, whats the right way to live – In harmony and understanding, not fighting for satisfying your Ego.

Thanks once again.

Regards,
Vikram.
